Kazakhstan increases rail passenger and freight transportation

Kazakhstan witnessed a six percent increase in passenger and freight traffic by railway transport in January this year. Overall, passenger traffic by railways accounted for 1.8 million people a month. As for freight volume, it reached nearly 32 million tonnes in January 2024. According to the Energyprom.kz portal, the amount of investment in fixed capital in the sphere of passenger intercity transportation reached almost 48 billion tenge, which is 3.3 percent more than the previous year. The highest indicator was recorded in the North Kazakhstan region with 28.5 billion tenge. The region’s share amounted to 59.8 percent of the country’s total volume. The Karagandy and Zhetisu regions ranked second and third, respectively. As for investments in fixed capital in the sphere of freight railway transportation, they reached 239 billion tenge by the end of 2023. In monetary terms, the growth was 2.4 times, with most funds directed to the city of Astana, just over 78 percent or 188 billion tenge. A significant share of funds was also allocated to the Akmola region, and the remaining funding were distributed among other eight regions of the country.
