Senators raise problem of flood situation in Kazakhstan

The government should implement systemic and comprehensive measures aimed at preventing, and not just at eliminating emergencies and flood situations, in particular. Member of the Senate, the Upper House of the Kazakh Parliament Sergei Yershov made such an inquiry today. He noted that today almost half of the country’s hydraulic engineering facilities are in disrepair and need repair and modernization. Yershov stressed that the issue of flood prevention is an integral part of the country’s water security. To this end, the need to speed up the drafting of a new Water Code should not be ignored either.

“At the next meeting of the Upper House on April 14, 2022, we would like to hear a preliminary answer on the results of the consideration of our parliamentary inquiry, which is proposed to be announced by the Emergency Situations Minister, Mr. Ilyin, with the invitation of Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources, Mr. Brekeshev, to report on water management, and Minister of Industry and Infrastructure Development Mr. Uskenbayev to talk about the development of the storm sewer system, irrigation ditches and road construction,” Yershov said.

In turn, Senate Speaker Maulen Ashimbayev noted that several regions of the country faced floods and the consequences of the spring flooding. However, local executive bodies and ministries were not ready for the situation. Ashimbayev instructed Vice Speaker of Senate Olga Perepechina to take control of this issue.
