The Burabai National Nature Park in Akmola region and Markakol Nature Reserve in the east of the country have been included into the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO. Such a decision was made at the 34th session of the International Coordinating Council of the Programme on Man and Biosphere. Today, the national network of UNESCO biosphere reserves in Kazakhstan includes 15 natural sanctuaries. This is the highest number in Central Asia. This reflects the attention paid by the international community to the conservation of Kazakhstan’s biological diversity.

“It was very good dossier, submitted by Kazakhstan. And, we are happy to approve the nomination of that pathway itself. And, we have extended our warm congratulations to the country people of Kazakhstan, as well as delegation of Kazakhstan in Paris was done a sustained job to get all the required information,” said Adeshola Adepoju, Chair of the International Coordinating Council of the Programme on Man and Biosphere Reserve.
