Ancient city of Golden Horde era discovered in Atyrau region

Another ancient city was discovered in the Atyrau region. The scientists refer it to the Golden Horde era. It was located 25 kilometers from its capital – Saraishyk. During the excavations, archaeologists found the burial place of about the same period.

“In the last two years, archaeologists have found not only the ancient cities and settlements, but also identified three directions, along which caravans travelled. Researchers also discovered a small town in Karagaily. The excavations there have begun. Artifacts can help to find out that this city was the same age as the Golden Horde capital – Saraishyk,” said Madiyar Yeleuov, Doctor of Historical Sciences.

“This city occupies an area of about 1,000 square meters. Fragments of clay pitchers, ceramics and 14th-century coins were found there. We would like to note that this is a real contribution to the Kazakh history. According to a Russian scientist, there are similar large mausoleum burials in the neighboring country. But they were all robbed. The feature of our own is that the groundwork and the lower floor were completely preserved,” noted Muktar Abilseit, Director of the State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve ‘Saraishyk’.

Archaeologists, including the foreign ones, say that this burial place may contain the remains of a powerful person. But this is yet an assumption. As for the city, scientists agree that it could be Karavansaray, which was located at the Great Silk Road.
